Detroit associates Drew Branigan and Brandon Pellegrino were published in DRI's The Brief Case for their article detailing changes made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA).
On March 30, 2022, the NHTSA published a Final Rule amending certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for vehicles with automated driving systems (ADS). The amendments focus chiefly on regulating ADS technology. It includes modifications and additions of existing definitions for clarity and safety as well as changes regarding vehicle restraint systems, namely seatbelts and airbags. The changes are subtle but will later lay the foundations for broader regulation of ADS technology.
